Just to further hijack the thread - - my excuse for not hearing of DAD is that only the likes of Abba and A-ha from Scandinavia made down to NZ; however, I'm gobsmacked by these guys; seriously good fun; digging "Sleeping my day away" atm....

edit... just bought the album "No fuel left for pilgrims"... really good record!!

Good stuff- reminds me a bit of the SuperSuckers:

...we're wandering a bit off-topic, but it's a natural tangent, I guess.

First look at the multi-track recordings from the show on 11/13...some tech issues on the drum mics, but it looks like we captured what we needed, mostly. Here's some quick mixes (just bass & ambient drums) giving samples of the Mat basses on some harder-hitting tunes.

VS600B, on a lively/funky bass line (hitting pretty hard with a pick to pop some of the notes):

...and the Cat Bass, on a more straight-forward rocker with a bass solo stuck in the middle ("J" pickup alone for that section, P+J for the rest):

...the full-mix solo:

Very rough mixes, and the bass signal was captured by a Direct Box before the amp- I'll be able to get some better results by mucking around with some amp simulators or just re-amping the signal. Also, cues were missed in both solo sections, so the awkward chord changes are pretty obvious at this point (to me, at least).

Hey Squid! Terrific playing!
I'm sittin' here in my so-called "office", at 10:30 at night, up to here in old computer equipment that I'm in the middle of tossing out (it's killing me to part with $thousands of old stuff, but it's gotta be done) and eating some mixed nuts with my red wine ('tis the Season ya know)...and I'm really enjoying the groove man!

I can't make up my mind which bass I prefer, they're both great. But if I was forced to pick I think I'd go for the VS600, mainly because I love the sound of my own VS600 guitar so much, and this sounds like a kindred spirit. Sounds like youse guys was gettin' down baby!!

Thanks so much, Barry! There's more recordings to come, with some variation to the style & approach to the playing (some finger picked, some more palm-muted, some chording, etc.) so you should be able to get some better ideas of the range of both basses.

Pretty fly for a white guy, there, Squid!! :D To my ears, the Vantage has a little more ..."presence", for lack of a better term but really, they both sound pretty bloody good; nice!!

The Aria had semi-flatwounds on, it would be a little smoother overall. Also, using both pickups on the Cat gives a little scooped-mid tone.

Some "Corsair-specific" notes on that little duet solo quoted in the links- that little piece was originally written & recorded with the Hollywood Avenger, then an accompanying bass line was written on the Cat Bass, which was adorned with fresh "Down Under" stickers like Koalas and Tasmanian Devils and cork hats for this concert.

Very nice. If that is what you can do with a pick, I can't wait to here you do some serious slapping and popping.

Get down with your bad self ! :D Well done ! Both axes sound great, the "Cat" sounds better than I might have expected.
I usually lean toward "miked -up" amp sounds (ok, sometimes I cheat and use a Sansamp  ) but the direct sounds really good on these, not too sterile at all.

Sounds like this was a fun project !

Cheers,
G
