Are you Canadian Grigg?

Lord No! (Although I know some Canadians, and I even like a few)That comment was more for Mike, as in, if it were me, and used Traynors were growing on trees, well then-that's what I would go for. My experiences with Traynors, especially the tube stuff has been very positive.

Thought of something else. I've played on numerous "new" Ampeg and "new" Acoustic rigs and have found them to be....hmm, lacking? The vintage Ampeg and Acoustics still rule, but I'm not terribly impressed with the new Chinese efforts. What a shame.

Cheers,
G

Good topic. I'm currently on the hunt to upgrade/upsize my bass rig, and have gone through a number of them in the last 30 or so years, so here goes. :D

I'm currently using either a Genz-Benz M-200T (200w combo w single 12)or an Eden WTX260 (one of those 260W class D "mini" heads, about 6 lbs) with either 1 or 2 single 15" cabs loaded with EVM speakers. For bigger shows, I've been known to slave a 1,000W Crown amp and add another 15 or two.

I've always LOVED the sound of tube heads for bass, but it's not for everyone. I used a HiWatt Custom 50(!) for a long time with 2 of the single 15's. Not a ton of headroom, but WHAT A SOUND! :D If I had unlimited funds (and a roadie) I'd be using the HiWatt 400 Bass rig with an 8x10 or 2.Listen to the Stranglers for a good idea of the p-bass/HiWatt combo.

I'm currently looking at a "vintage" SWR 400 and Goliath 4x10 as my upgraded rock rig. The aforementioned genz and Eden are just a little shy in the power department for some of my current gigs, and the outdoor fetival season is upon us.

Being a Canadian and all, I think I'd be on the hunt for a vintage Traynor rig, and the Genz-Benz would be my second choice. Not a lot of first hand experiance with Carvin amps (though I had one of the basses). Seems to be a lot of mixed opinions on the new stuff.

my 2cents!

I sold my old SWR SM-400S to a good friend that played one through an SWR "Henry the 8x8" cabinet and loves it, so he wanted a spare amp. I liked it because it had a built-in crossover and two power amps, in case I wanted to bi-amp (I have a custom-made cabinet with a JBL 15" and two Roland 10"s). It was a very clean amp, to me it didn't have a personality of its own, it just made you + your bass louder. Tube pre, built-in limiter. Not sure if my friend still has two, Gribb let me know if you want me to ask if he's selling one.

I've got a few permutations available to me, depending on what's needed for the gig.

Smallest (for songwriting sessions, coffee-house gigs) is a little Fender Sidekick bass amp with 1 x 10" ported...it's actually kinda shoddy (non-adjustable limiter kicks in early and often, and crackles when it does), and mostly serves as a monitor for me & could send a line level to a PA or recorder if needed. One other option which I sold recently was an SWR Strawberry Blonde- built as an acoustic guitar amp, it did fine for bass at low levels...definitely better than this Fender. I do miss my old (stolen) Fender Bassman 15, an all-tube combo with a 15" speaker for these purposes.

Medium size is one of my Pearce amps (110+ watts) into either a single JBL 15 closed-back cab or the 1 x 15" ported/2 x 10" open-back I mentioned above (has a passive crossover).

Large size is a Hartke 3500 into an Altec 2 x 15", which (like Gribb mentions) can be augmented with some serious power amps & speakers if desired...things could get very silly before I'd have to start borrowing or renting. Even in my basement when rehearsing, things are patched through where I could get 6 x 15"s and 1,000+ watts if I felt like rearranging my internal organs. :toopid:

Here's the custom cab at an outdoor gig, it's behind the blonde P-Bass. It has a built-in 3RU rack for the amp, two fans (intake & exhaust), and a cup holder! His name is "Robbie".

Great happy snap. Must say that I'm glad I don't have to worry about bass amps.
After reading all of this I think I'll need to go and have a lay down and let my head settle for a bit.
Also great to see a bit of Brass (trom) get in on the act :D

I work with that band a lot (Everyday People), they have sax/trumpet/trombone. I auditioned for the bass guitar spot in that band recently, and came in second place! Here's a mix I did pretty recently of one of their outdoor shows:

After a lot of head scratching, napkin doodling, and higher math modelling, this is what I came up with:

Carvin BX500 head http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/single.php?product=BX500 (with optional carrying case)
Carvin BR115N-4 http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/single.php?product=BR115N-4
Carvin BR210N-4 http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/single.php?product=BR210N-4

I picked up the cabs on Ebay for a discount, and the head direct from Carvin (the salesman threw in the carrying case for free... nice!)

So here's my reasoning:

The head is small, light, portable, and powerful enough for everything I will realistically need to use it for.
The 2X10 cab will live in my practice room, and provide me more than enough oomph for practice/home play.
The 1x15 cab will be for band practice, and will be more than enough oomph to keep up with the drums/guitars, even for small gigs.
Both cabs can be utilized if I need a bit more rounded sound, or to fill up a larger gig space or outdoors.

All in all, there shouldn't be much more I need to get unless we play really really large gigs, in which case EVERYONE will need better gear, so I'm not too concerned.

Portable, powerful, and relatively inexpensive (the whole rig for less than a grand, shipped).

- Mike

Nice choices. You got a lot of flexibility there. I think that head has a direct out so you could always use the amp for onstage monitoring while having a line to the PA for any gigs that are too big for the rig.

Ya know Squid.... :D
We have kind of played around with our PA a little lately. Thing is we got this outdoors gig coming up may 21st as i´ve mentioned elsewhere, and we expect like 300 or so very picky people(a national guitar fair is up earlier in the day) to show up.

Limits are limits though and as such.. There´s MUCH more to tuning a fullblown PA than meets the eye though,as i´m absolutely certain you´ :toopidlol: re aware.
To us tho...it is getting silly...
I guess you´re aware that around here we´ve got 240V in the sockets.? Well...that raceshop of mine runs 63amp fuses....and we´re startin to talk about gettin some spare ones...

So true so true....IF IT`S TO LOUD YOU`RE TO OLD!!!

(Just came to think of it as today we had a talk about how to express the bass via lineout through the mixer-which in turn is an old british Soundcraft that i overhauled a while back. Sounds just fantastic fwiw.)
(Speaking of which...yeah...we got a permit from the police to go at it. What they DON`T know...is to what degree.... :toopidlol: . Well well...i guess they´ll get to know sooner or later, one way or another...see...the funny part is that there´s a police station like 1 click down the road  :sneaky:

I like to frame those permits & hang 'em on the wall... :devil2:

OUTDOOR gigs have even more complications than indoor gigs, and need MUCH more power behind them. Best of luck, post lots of pics!

Here's a couple of pics from an outdoor July 4th gig with the aforementioned horn-driven funk band. I took the opportunity to record the band 16 track, on cassette! Just wanted to see if it could be done. Sorry, no pics of the amp racks. http://www.southardaudio.com if you want to check out the PA company...
