Hello everyone. New poster here. I am interested in putting super distortion pickups back in my '77 1500. I'm wondering if anyone knows if they were black or cream that year. I've looked at the sales material from that year and it would seem that they were black with a white switch tip and then I see cream in the '78 sales material. I like the look of the cream a bit more, but want to get as close to original as possible. Thank you.

I can't say with 100% certainty and I didn't get the original pickups in my PE but I believe they went with black.
Also the reissues have black.

Thank you Kmaxpe1500. That's where I am too. I'm familiar with the reissues and am pretty sure that they were black that first year, but less than 100%.

I believe black for first year is correct but I'm with you, I prefer the cream.
Personally, I always like the switch tip to match the pickup rings but I am a bit odd.
References will chime in shortly...

As much as I prefer the cream, the "purist" side of me might win this one...

If I am installing aftermarket pickups I usually go with whatever floats my boat. As it will be non-stock and it doesn't bother me everyone else can fret over their own and leave me to mine. After all, I am replacing the stock pickups. I go zebra on most but sometimes nickel, black, all cream or covered depending on the model. Just hang on to the originals and draw up a stock diagram to be safe.

I had never thought about it before but I don't have a zebra or a cream pup on any of my guitars.

Most are black open coil with a few nickel covered, notably the Danelectro lipsticks, the Vintage Tele neck pup, and the Gibson ES330 dog ear P90's.

The APII TA-60, the Epiphone Studio and the Westone X125 have all had their original pups replaced with humbucker P90's, also nickel covered.
