Once again Vic, many, many thanks.
I've added them to my spreadsheet.
Just a quick question regarding 010234 & 010254.
They are on your list as 2nd run, could there possibly be an error in either the numbers or the run series ?
Other numbers I have either side them are all first run, with second run SB #s on my list not starting until 101003
Do you have any way to check them?
Cheers Mate,
Trevor.

Hello Trevor, I checked the database and yes, they are "2nd run" ("open book" headstock) SB700 , but You are probably correct; looking at the photos in both cases it appears to be a "1" digit before 010252 and 010234 so not october 1980 but january 1981 (1010252 and 1010234); but .... in this way those serial numbers would be composed of 7 digits; and if we are correct the 7 digits system was introduced in october 1981, not in january so I guessed that the "1" digit has been a dark veins in the wood.
Here are the photos :

What do You think about?

Hi Vic, thats great that you've kept pics to go with the numbers, friggin awesome.
Ok, so the way I see it there are several possibilities.
It looks to me that the first digit is indeed a 1, to coincidental to be on both.
Could the 7 digit change over have happened earlier? I really doubt it.
All of the other SB numbers also say no.
My spreadsheet has a distinct line at October 81 across all models.
My feeling is a mistake in the printing of the serial numbers.
With this theory there are 2 possibilities,
1: The zero before the last 3 digits was mistakenly added, which makes it a January 81, Headstock now fits, serial number now fits.
2:The 2nd & 3rd digits were mistakenly put around the wrong way until the mistake it was picked up.
This gives us 110, October 81, Headstock Fits, serial number now fits.
Personally the 2nd scenario seems the most likely & would explain the 2 strange number sets so close to each other.
If this is the case more numbers around them should occasionally appear.
Time will tell I guess, they'll be noted & logged accordingly.
Greats stuff though, very interesting, it was getting a bit easy & I needed a bit of a shake up.
Cheers Mate.

Thanks heaps for the numbers Vic,
Can I trouble you to post up, or send me a close up photo of the serial number on the SB900 with the 226 serial.
Also i'm not sure the bolt on neck serials work with this, some do appear to, but there are also some that definitely don't.
Can I also ask if your TSB-550 is a Thor Sound (as opposed to Tri Sound) & if it has the newer 2 each side tuners?
Thanks again.
Cheers Mate.

Hello Trevor, here is the picture of the serial number on my SB900; is an evidence that the original number was swept away and rerecorded with a probably fake new number (not by me but, I guess, by the previous owner. I can not imagine the reason).

Hi all,

I was pointed in the direction of this forum by Guitar Gallery after contacting them with information regarding a bass guitar I recently obtained, and my quest to get another of this model and to investigate any further history I might glean about the particular item I own. (And that it might be of particular interest to other members here due to it's heritage).

The guitar in question is an Aria Pro II SB-R150 Fretless with 1 previous owner from new. The serial number is 109891, which, going by the concensus of how the serial numbers ran, would make it a 1981 model. Being a fretless model makes it quite rare in and of itself but what makes it unique is that 1 previous owner i mentioned early - namely, Jack Bruce. Although it's not as famous as several of his other basses, it still has that heritage, as it was specially made for him and I believe that not many of this fretless model were made for general sale.

It's a beautiful instrument to play (and I have used it live a couple of times) but, given it's heritage, I don't really want to be using it as my main instrument, so I'm on the lookout for another example of this model that I can use in place of my Overwater (by Tanglewood) which I really liked until I got this Aria.

Steve

Wow thats amazing.
Can you post some more pics in the Members treasures section.
Endorsers 1 off personal instruments are super rare.
Cheers.

Hi Trevor,
I've only got mediocre photos that I took for the insurance company at the moment (I intend to take some decent ones when I find some free time) but I've uploaded them to Members Treasures section (viewtopic.php?f=36&t=13122), as requested.

Hi Trevor, the mistery of the 7 digits in some SB serial numbers continues.... I have just found another one! 1010070. And it is a SB700 again....

Hi Vic,
Yes, it would imo appear to be from the same run as the first 2.
All having 101 as the first 3 digits.
I actually have 101007 (SB) in my list, which is a correct 6 digit number & 1100069 (SBR) which would be the previous 7 digit number to this if we look again at the second scenario I proposed above.
Identifying & recording these anomalies really is the only way to get to the bottom of such things.
Cheers for your help Vic, very appreciated.
