Vintage Guitar Magazine has opened up it's archives back to 2013 as a courtesy to people in self isolation.
I came across this article in the January 2014 issue which may be of interest to APII PE fans:

Thanks Barry. I'm a big fan of the PE's. I owned a black PE-R80 at one time and now own a red PE-R60.
Honestly, I think I like the R60 better than what I remember of the R80. It always seemed a bit harsh.

Cheers for that, bloke!

I'm not a huge fan of the PEs, but that Supra that Don has is just a little bit special, and my LC440 is a very close cousin...

... one cannot help but nod knowingly at the simply awesome build quality and design concepts in these, though! Don has a few and there is one that he has that I like playing - I can't remember the model but it has 2 knobs and a satin finish - but it is an absolute belter; a real bruiser with tone for Australia.

Les Pauls, and LP clones, look GOOD in white, eh...

hi everybody,

I'm also a PE fan. I got 5 in my collection: a battered but otherwise completely original PE-1000, a cherry sunburst PE-500, a tobacco brown sunburst PE-500, a seethrough red PE-R60 and a PE-60 B&G. I played the chery sunburst the most, but at the moment all of them are in storage in my attic and I tend to play on my Vantage and Westone guitars.
But that was not the main reason I responded. I recently finished a 3 month guitar building course in the UK. Because of corona I had to end it sooner then I would have liked, but I built one guitar that was inspired by the Aria Pro II PE's. It isn't finished yet, but you get the idea. That wasn't my only Mats inspired built, but I will open a post about it in the approriate place on the forum. But I couldn't deny you a few photos.

The hardware is going to be gold and cream and the knobs are going to be maple covered cold in the same color as the body.

Kind regards, Rob.

Hey Wutz, what stands out as inaccurate? Just curious because all I know is what I read. I know you're local.

It has nothing to do with "local"... I go with the flow of the article (and hopefully don't forget anything):

1. According to Mr. Arai, all electric guitars were made by Matsumoku (until they closed). I have reason to doubt his memory for the last one or two years of production... but not the early ones.
2. BC Rich guitars are neck through, the heel design of the PE has nothing in common with that (look for an upscale RS model, if you are into a BC Rich type neck construction.
3. The PE-R60 was replaced by a PE-60 in 1983... not 1984. Also there are quite a number of models not mentioned... and I've yet to see a Matsumoku made PE Image, Custom or Standard (not even the catalogs from 1986/87 mention them). There's actually a Japanese book detailing the models and years... there is no mention of them neither. I know that they are mentioned on this web site, but the list on this web site started from a list compiled by Michael Wright.
4. The "fancy limited 25th Anniversary Version", was actually called PE-R150 and produced in 1981/82 (Mr. Arai started his business in the 50's, go figure).
5. Japanese made PE's never went out of production. They were joined by a large number of Korean and Chinese made cheaper models, but there was always at least one Japanese high end model available.
