Very nice but don't have the facilities to do that. And the goal was to try and restore, not replace.

make it a hard-tail to simplify things...
Yeah that was my first inclination way back at the start of this thing.

Just too dumb to know any better.

Well, it's for certain that this Mats design is extremely fragile and not well thought out, especially with trying to accommodate a tremolo. And the Bozo I got it from all but ruined it by stressing it well beyond it's tenuous operating parameters with his "modifications. And it doesn't help when you drop it on its little horn!
I'm lucky there's enough left to fix; I think it was being held together with paint!

Did you have the possibility to measure the radius on the fretboard?
No I don't, sorry. No gauges at all, and I've not had the need to make any, even out of cardboard.
I should be dropping in to my local guitar shop soon. If I remember I'll take the neck in and see if the tech has a gauge to do a quick measurement for me.

OK, OK, it's done.
Consider the Urchin well and truly screwed...again!

It took some time to try and figure out the angle/path to take. I drew and re-drew the guide lines until I had what looked about right. The crack shows a bit faintly but you can make it out if you squint. You can see the pencil lines intersecting the crack.

I initially was going to use #8 screws then I changed my mind at the last minute and bumped them up to #10 x 1-1/2". I figured I may as well use the maximum that I can get away with. they look a little scary in this pic:

Before driving them in I filled the holes with carpenter's glue:

The countersink was then filled with wood putty, and there she sits waiting to harden up:

The crack appears to have tightened up, so it's all good (I hope).

Then, it's back to sanding, probably another minor touch up get rid of any shrinkage "dents"...and, oh yeah, PAINTING!

Dang. I wouldn't be brave enough to put screws that close to the edge of a body. Good work--& I hope you really flooded the pilot holes before you tightened down the screws.

I tell ya--I was really excited to see you finish this, Barry. I still am, but I'm feeling fatigued just at seeing what you've gone through. I would have lost it weeks ago. Again--good work.

There were more than a few tense moments I can tell you! But I didn't have much choice as to where the screws had to go. About half way through I was beginning to wonder if it was a good idea to change to the larger screws though.

Yes, lots of glue. The good news is that the crack has closed good and tight. I just have to tidy it all up now and hope that's the end of it!

p.s. The latest distress is that I went today to get some more paint and...they had none! Every other darn colour but that one. I have a feeling it may have been discontinued. I have to now try one of he other stores to see if they have stock. If not....
