Just saw this post...haven't been on the forum in a while. Here is my post from May 2010 - http://www.matsumoku.org/ggboard/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5442&p=38684#p38684

I have an AS-25 with the same head stock as the AS 30. Looks VERY similar in all respects. My guitar was bought from Sam Ash in Long Island in either 1984 or 1985. I do remember the sales guy steering us towards this guitar over others saying it was a discontinued model but made with higher quality materials than other similarly priced guitars.

Anyone find out more info on the AS 30?

Hi mpmclaugh33. Nice guitar! No, I haven't had any luck finding any more info. There was one on eBay a while back, an AS-25 like yours, but the seller didn't respond to my request for info (clearly I wasn't an interested buyer :D ). The Sam Ash connection might be a clue. Maybe they were the perpetrators of the headstock alteration? BTW, like yours, there is no serial number on my label, but there is one near the truss rod bolt.

After reading your post I went and looked inside the guitar and sure enough there was a serial number up by the truss rod. 811253. I don't think you can date the guitar by serials on acoustics the same way you can on the electrics. Never realized that the angled cuts on the headstock were not quite symmetrical until this thread!

Just out of curiosity I checked the serial to see if it's close to yours. So, this is where it gets strange. My "serial" is also 811253. Maybe someone with some more knowledge could comment on what this number could be. It sure looks like a serial number, though. :-?
