Hi everyone I am new here ! and just acquired a black X35 Avenger on ebay it was a buy it now deal for $160 plus shipping. The guitar doesn't look too bad but does have some wear. The pictures he took were pretty bad. I hope it meets up to what I have heard about avengers , But I can' find much info on the X 35 ????. I originally was checking out a Vantage les paul that looked very well made but got out bid in the last minute. I researched Vantage before bidding on the les paul and read where some people said that Avengers were not copies and were even better quality. Thats when I started checking them out. I think I got a decent deal (what do you think) ? ,and should get it delivered next week . I can then take some pictures. I have other Japanese guitars but not sure if they are Matsumokus. They are Kent (strat copy) Teisco Del ray hollow body , and a teisco twin PU tulip w tremolo, Harmony Strat copy and a lyle acoustic. My favorit guitar to play as of now is my fender modern player marauder if it is as good as this who knows I might switch favorites ! I also have a 1986 Japanese 62 fender tele reissue. but I doubt its a Matsumoku. But I know at least one of my guitars is lol

$160 is a nice price if it is in good shape. I don't think the X series were called Avengers during the time they were made by Matsumoku (I could be wrong). I am sure someone who knows these models better will be along soon. Good luck with the guitar.

The X-35 is probably Chusin-Gakki rather than Matsumoku, but doesn't suffer for that at all. I have had 2 X series, one of which I still have - a flat black 315T - and one I don't, a flat black X-99.
I think you've got a good guitar, especially for tbe price, and one which will overmatch just about any other bolt neck guitar you own; I rate mine very highly indeed and as a stage guiat, it is as light as on the shoulder which is great when you're an old bugger like me!

I don't like flat black finishes but have been shamed into not refinishing it by another member in here - who knows who he is - as I have a penchant for tearing 'em down and making 'em better!! :D

From what I can see, the X-35 is a strat set-up with 3 s/c pickups, right? Is that what you bought? They nicely made and well put together; I don't think you'll regret the purchase at all; in fact... I think if may be the start of an obseesion that a few in here still have....

.... not looking at anyone..... Don!!

X-35 should be one of the last Vantage models made by Matsumoku - from my POV. Probably made in the first half of 1984 (serial number on back plate 40xxxxx).
2 humbuckers! (3 SC = model X-33)
There's not much info to find on this model and it would be nice if you could provide some pics!

you are correct Mozart . I think also about the matsumoku location as the rear neck plate matches up with the others http://imageshack.com/a/img537/8088/LedrAS.jpg I should have the guitar in a week or so . The picture is from the auction BTW thanks for all the replies !

Looking good!
Feb. 1984 / Matsumoku
"Avenger"-trademark and headstock logo was used for both: Avenger-series and X-series
Interesting: first X-series guitars (1982) have had a different shaped body with one of the horns looking outwards...
Vantage X-series production went back to the classic Avenger body-form in 1983/84.

Have fun with your "new" guitar & Merry Christmas

Johann
