I've been doing search after search for info about these. Does anyone here have any info on them?

Ceramic mags?
High output?
Anything?

I really like the way these sound. They match perfectly with my Orange OR15. Lots of character and cool harmonics going on from them.

Not really, no; I've got one here with the FS marked p'ups and yeah: it's a goodie alright! From memory - my guitars are all stacked away under a tarp in my shed!! - it has a red Omega mark on the pickuo cover.... or have I got that wrong?!

I think received wisdom is that the immediate post-Matsumoku guitars that were Japanese made were very possibly Terada-made; the truth is that we know next to nothing about them!

The FS marked pickups came out of the early Vantage guitars. I seem to remember them being in "The Ghost" for one.
I think I also have them in one of my guitars, but for the life of me I can't remember which one it is. It could be the 790 but I'm just not sure.

I too have an unsolved puzzle on my '82 Urchin (http://www.matsumoku.org/ggboard/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6058&start=30#p37265 ) It came with a stamped MMK45 in the bridge but a considerably shallower, unmarked pup in the neck. Scroll down for a shot of the back of the pups.

It tests out as 7.5K, so more in the PAF range. I haven't yet found anything to identify it, and it's definitely original.

I wonder if it's related to the FS series somehow? What's the output on those?

Unknown.

Here's the original pups in my '79 VS650:

FS is most likely for "F-Spacing".

From Wiki:
There are several standards on pickup sizes and string spacing between the poles. Spacing is measured either as a distance between 1st to 6th polepieces' centers (this is also called "E-to-E" spacing), or as a distance between adjacent polepieces' centers.

1st-to-6th

Adjacent

Standard spacing (Vintage Gibson guitars) 1.90"
48 mm 0.380"
9.6 mm
F-spacing
(Most Fender guitars, modern Gibson, Floyd Rose bridges) 2.01"
51 mm 0.402"
10.2 mm
Very close to bridge, extra pickup
(Roland guitar synth hex pickups) 2.060"
52.3 mm 0.412"
10.5 mm
Telecaster spacing
(Fender Telecaster guitars) 2.165"
55 mm 0.433"
11 mm
Steinberger Spirit GT-Pro spacing
(may be typical for other Steinberger guitars) 2.362"
50 mm 0.3937"
10 mm

That's a reasonable assumption Johann (my Urchin is an F-scale guitar).
Unfortunately it still doesn't help much with the technical specs. :dunno:

I think it's unlikely that FS stands for Fender Spacing. I had FS pickups in a Vantage VLP from around 79 or 80. In those days there were very few vendors of aftermarket pickups. I don't think there were many pickups available with choice of Fender or Gibson spacing so the terminology wasn't widely used. The VLP I had was a Les Paul style - probably wasn't Fender Spaced.

I've seen someone on eBay advertising a VLP as having genuine Gibson T-Top pickups. Ha! Mine did have the T. I think it was put there to make the pickups look like Gibsons.

I think the VLP FS set measured around 8K each at the guitar's output jack. This resistance measurement tells little about how a pickup sounds. I remember them as being fairly clean and medium output. If you like them in your guitar, that's what counts.

I think there's a previous thread about these, but I can't find it with the site search or Google.

Steve W.

I presently have a newly listed post on site looking for information regarding a "T" top pickup on my VLP-500.

If you could take the time and read it over, you might have the information I'm looking for.

Thanks,

John Y.
