Stay tuned, as the Mats Mystery Hour continues....after these brief messages. :hyper:

I hope Frenchy will join the "Matsumoku Mystery Hour" again!
He is away since some months, and he is probably the regular with the most collected knowledge about Vantage guitars and basses!

In 1978 gibson introduced the "the paul standard " guitar but were actually sold on the market in 1979 , these guitars had a les paul shaped body , 2 exposed coil humbucker pickups , walnut body ( beveled edges sg style ), tune o matic bridges , no pickguards , decal logos a, were made in natural colors , "the paul" on truss rod covers and were Discontinued in 1982 .

The VANTAGE VP750 from the first cat is a copy of "the paul" !
Like a lot of other japanese brands from the late seventies, VANTAGE has had copies + original designs in the (first) catalog. As a copy always comes after the original, the GHOST couldn't have existed before 1979.

This said, let's have a look at VANTAGE Germany:
At the Frankfurt music fair, early 1980, the famous cymbal company PAISTE presented: "PAISTE DISTRIBUTIONS" - a subcompany to distribute other brands. One of this brands: VANTAGE!
There has been NO VANTAGE distribution in Germany in 1979! No german shop has had Vantage guitars in 1979!
I've read my way through a heap of '79 music magazines and found a lot of interesting stuff. You could buy a Dumble Overdrive for 1000.- EUR at that time, rare Californian Moonstone electrics, and neckthrus, neckthrus, neckthrus...(Ibanez, Kasuga, Alembic, Bell, Klira, Bambu, S.D.Curlee, Kist, B.C.Rich, Boogie, Morris, and many more)...but NO VANTAGE.
No ads, no offers from shops - I've found nothing concerning the Vantage brand before 1980!

Another thing I've seen by reading 1981, 1982 magazines:
The Frankfurt music fair used to present Vantage models that have been available in the USA the year before.
Obviously you could buy new Vantage models in America, before they came to Europe, about half a year later.
Matching: In the Vantage threads of this board, there's some US/CAN guys who claim to have bought their first brand new Vantage in 1979.

From all sources I've rummaged through, I come to the conclusion: VANTAGE GERMANY 1980 - 1987 (Feb.)
...................................................................................VANTAGE US / CAN 1979 - 1987 (Feb.)

I could not find ANY hint for a Vantage start earlier than 1979!
From my POV, Vantage must have started in the second half of 1979 in CAN/US! Maybe the first three models (600VS, 700VP, 800Artist) were available some months earlier!???

Could someone of you overseas-guys get his hands on American 1979 music magazines? There must be
to find some kind of announcement or presentation of the new Vantage brand!
Anyone ???

One more confirmed early Vantage acoustic model: VA25

More details if the seller gets back to me with serial number etc.

I've made some updates to the "history"!
The chronology is getting better and better, but still far away from being perfect.
Feel free to point out missing models or mistakes!
