@Mike: the 695B from your link doesn't look carved to me. At least not in the way my VS696 is carved:

http://www.matsumoku.org/ggboard/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=7197&start=0&hilit=VS696
I know it is hard to see on the pics, but 3 to 5 centimeters at the edges of the top are about half a centimeter lower than the rest of the top. The bottom of the guitar is plain - like a regular VS600.

If the 696B from your second link is carved or not? hard to tell from the poor pics! I bet it is!

From my experience and all the pics I have accumulated in my files, the reg 696 guitar and bass has got the carve top and the 695 models does not. Both the 12 string version of the 695 and 696 does however have the carve top.(still trying to figure out the difference on the 12's)

Same as the VP series, the VP820 is reg top and the VP825 has the carved top.

My 2 cents.

P.

Are you sure? Very hard to make out any lettering on the truss rod covers with that pic.

But what I do see is the bass in the middle — the one labled 696 — has squared off edges to the body, whereas the two labled 695 both have much more rounded edges.

And could it be possible the two have different body wood types? (Pure speculation on my part.)

I'm NOT sure! Some days ago i thought I could read the truss rod covers, but today I'm unsure again. :dunno:
Let's wait until Squid has checked his original catalog!
