The top and back are laminated ("plywood") ash--either true North American ash (genus FRAXINUS) or "Japanese ash" (sen) which is an unrelated but similar-looking species. The neck would be either hard maple (ACER SACCHARUM) or "mahogany"--either a true mahogany (SWIETIENA) or a similar-looking substitute.

Simple answer: The price is what you're willing to pay for! :)

If it is of any help for you: I've paid 450.- for my VE470, and 500.- for my VSH445. All my other Vantages I got for less money - and most of these guitars are "like new"... :blush:
