I remember Japanese guitars were used by Africans in the eighties, these could include Aria's, Westone's, Vantages and probably more. This video showing footage of a BBC documentary of which I was unable to trackdown the name. I think the bass might be a Westone concord and the leadguitarist is playing
a Vantage. I'm not sure but it looks like a VP 795. What are your thoughts?

Anyway I thought it nice enough to share (thanks to Rufus, longtime africanmusic afficionado).
BTW the other guitarist is probably playing his guitar in 'Mi-Composé' tuning, in which the standard D is changed to a B string tuned to D an octave higher. A 'soukous' accompanying thing. The young leadguitarist shows his showmanship by starting playing the solopart (sebene) behind his neck and the crowd loves it. Often soukous Congolese bands played interwoven guitar patterns by three or more guitars.

Kees wat ben je toch goed op de hoogte! Bedankt!
Thanks Kees, for your smile and your good eye, you seem to be so wellinformed always!
Brought back sweet memories when I attended concerts in the good old days with about 20 musicians on stage!
Times have changed here in the Netherlands.
Sorry to al you forum members if this is way off-topic
but... If you liked the video, you might like this other one of an African guitarplayer with a unique style.

It is not a Vantage but very entertaining and creative, not in the least when you realise it is setup with only three strings!

Interesting footage. Thanks.
I can see how Paul Simon got inspired to write what he did!

And is that a Westone Concord bass I'm seeing there?

Westone Concord Bass?
I think so barry, probably early, but I'm no expert.
Thanks!

Times have changed here in the Netherlands.

If someone asks me about the best live concert I've been to (I've seen -incomplete and in random order- Herman Brood, Vitesse, The Nits  , Bryan Adams, Dire Straits, Bon Jovi, Prince, Queen, INXS, The Stones ...) I'd have to say 1987, Paul Simon (and BAND) in Ahoy Rotterdam.
(Too bad I couldn't see The Doors, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Deep purple etc. at their height, might have changed the ranking somewhat :P )

Don't forget the Dizzy Man's Band! "Well come on everybody - sing with the band - Oooh Yeah...."

 :D

Bryan Adams is a great performer. Live far better than on his studio recordings!
He can give the impression of "club atmosphere", irrespective of the stage's size.
Springsteen has this ability too!
In general I'm prefering gigs at small places.
Especially when I'm on stage.

I am with you all the way there. Got most of Bryans albums, seen him live a couple of times, and the best perfomance was on an itty-bitty two-by-two (meters that is, for all you weird-measurement-creatures :P ) stage in the back of the stadium. Some 26000 expected to see him appear on the main stage, but instead he started out with an acoustic guitar in the back of the hall. Fantastic!

I'm watching this live concert held in Indonesia live.
http://www.youtube.com/user/JavaJazzFest?feature=inp-lt-jjf
Just seen David Sanborn and band (the drummer had a kit in my fav colour almost like this Image )
Herbie Hancock now. Next on will be Stevie Wonder and later on Pat Metheney.

When I was after a case I found this:

It has issues and it's not a Mat but a nice Japanese Westone case for sure at a reasonable price and the guitar doesn't sound bad either!
At the next string change I might find the reason. Di Margio's?
