...so, I'm spending Thanksgiving at my mother in-law's as usual, and, as usual, she has a small list of chores that need to be attended to the day after. I don't mind as it usually, a) gives me something to do, and b) usually involves a trip (or two) to the hardware store.

As it turns out, there is a pawn shop situated somewhere between my in-law's and the local ACE. ( not out of the way at all, I swear ! :D ) On many occasions before had checked this place out and never had seen anything to spark my interest, mostly new "Johnson" guitars and other assorted new, shiny and Chinesey
guitars and the like. In fact I drove past it twice (plumbing project - always good for at least 3 trips to the hardware store.......) before I said "what the heck, I need a break from the underside of a sink anyway" and pulled in. After seeing the usual stuff hanging on the walls, was about to leave when a spied a lonely little red guitar haphazardly leaned up against some nasty looking drums.

Saw the "SKYLARK" headstock , the $39 price tag, and well, let's say it made my day. Even better, it was 20% off day ( Black Friday indeed), so I got it for closer to $30 and they threw in a really cheap gig bag to boot.

Got it home, plugged it in ( everything worked - surprise !) and set about cleaning it up and adjusting things. I've still got some tweaking to do, and the stock tuners leave something to be desired, but it has genuine MMK45's , and sounds like it. Very close to my Cardinal.

Only really major blemish is that small strip of veneer missing from the headstock, otherwise it's in pretty decent shape, all things considered. I love a good bargain.

Moral of the Story ? Always volunteer to help out your Mother-in-Law, and NEVER give up on a pawn shop ! You just never know..... :D

Just checked my receipt again, I guess it was 30% off of 39.99 making the grand total $30.03 including tax !

Easily the best $30 guitar I've ever owned, that's for sure :D

BTW - it came with the TRC intact, I just had it off while tweaking it in, ( OK, it needed a LOT of "tweaking" ), and I ran outside to get a couple of pics to share with ya'll.

I'm digging it. Neck profile is very "Cardinal-esque". Sort of a poor man's LP Jr.
