A buddy of mine has an El Degas early 70's LP recording model clone (but the recording output is not installed, the top of the guitar is just made to look like the LP). He bought it used many years ago, and was told that it was made in Japan. Best guess is early '70's. Anyone know anything more about this lable and model?

Well, some good info there. Thanks for the link SalemB. Looks like I'll be telling my buddy that his ol' El Degas is not the collectible he may have been hoping for, after I turned him on to this site and rambled on for a while about the Uncle Matt story, and then he asked me if I had come across anything about his El Degas...

I think I can add a couple of things that might interest your friend. El Degas was indeed a Japanese guitar distributed by Buegeleisen & Jacobson out of their Toronto office in Canada. I have a 1974 El Degas brochure on my website that shows their guitars posing with small Kent amplifiers so they were definitely after the student market. Prices ranged from $150 to $180 back in the day.

Thanks again SB. I'll pass that info along to him, if he hasn't started loggin in here and seen this already. I came across some other info that said B&J were NY based distributors as well.

Yeah, I should have looked at your profile to see you were from the U.S. and would be more interested in stateside distribution. New York was B&J's main office. They also distributed out of Atlanta, Rolling Meadows, Ill and Mountain View, Calif during this period. sb
