I have received this SG from a friend as a gift and can't really tell what make it is.
The head stock lable has been scraped off more or less, but my guess would be "Fresher"?
It has Maxon Humbucker pickups in it. Serial number for these is 33906.
My main headache is the neck!
There is an additional fret right behind the nut, which i think does not belong there, besides that the neck needs to be refreted.
The nut does also not seem to original, looks like an accoustic nut with wrong string spacing.
Any help is very, very welcome.

mmm, can't add any pics? Why not?

Sorry, I have no idea what's wrong with the image posting.
We'll have to wait for the Admin to have a look at it.

It's very hard to comment on your query without pictures, but it occurs to me that what you are calling a "fret" behind the nut could be one of two things:
  • a string retainer bar
  • a "zero fret"

If it's a retainer bar it will be fastened with 2 screws, so easy to identify
If it's a zero fret then it would be ahead of the nut (on the fret board side) not behind it

Both of these designs were common on many MIJ guitars from the 60's and and 70's.

Dear Barry,as you have correctly figured, and i found this out just a few hours ago, it's a zero fret.
I didn't know until today, that such a "fret" even existed.
So, this fret is vital for the guitar, since it substitutes the nut.
It used to be common on guitars made before the gibson and fender area and is considered to be "better" than just the saddle set up.
I will post pictures of this guitar, as soon as it is possible.
Thanks for your help and correct answers.

You're very welcome, glad you have it figured out!

Setup with a zero fret is a little bit different in that the nut's only role now is maintaining string position. String action adjustment is more a function of how well the frets are leveled and how straight the neck is. The only adjustment would be the saddle height.

Intonation though would not be an issue since the zero fret will always be stable (unless worn down of course).

Image uploading is working fine. Not sure what the problem could be. Members have posted pics both before this thread and after it.

Maybe the file size is too high. I believe it is limited to 80 Kb per photo.

ExFender you are correct. I didn't think about that. The file size is limited to 80KB. ImageMagick is supposed to resize images automatically.

If it is still not working contact me using the form below and I'll send an email address to send the files to. I'll try posting them for you.

We may be getting close to an upgrade in hosting. Our bandwidth is getting close to the max monthly quota. If I do upgrade that will also increase storage and can raise the max image file size. Our storage usage is just above the 1GB quota but the hosting company is not complaining.
