I bought this from a guy in Nashville who told me it was a 1968 Arai of some sort. Question: Is it?

Those "Steel Adjustable Neck" stamped neckplates do seem to be exclusive to Aria/Matsumoku originated instruments, so I'd say in all likelihood it is.

Unfortunately the serials on these appear to be random, so don't give a clue to the date, although late 60s would seem reasonable, given the unique (and pretty cool) styling.

Jon.

More likely it was contracted through one of the same sources as use by Shiro Arai Co. There were many importers and distributors that used the same sources back then, and most was shelf stock ordered from a list offered by the manufacturer or assembler using smaller parts houses.

Whether is was actually sold by Arai Co. probably can't be determined now that the headstock badge is gone. If it left an impression that might give a hint. Aria Diamonds of that period had an oval badge with a little plastic gemstone at the top. Sometimes this can be seen in the finish.
