Picked this up today... Beauty - but is it Matsumoku???

Nice. When you can, look in the cavities and backside of pickups for any markings. The pickups may not be original though. . .

You are correct - Pickups were replaced. So were tuners and Bridge.

It's possible it could be. I've seen so many lists of what was and what wasn't that I can't remember off the top of my head.
I'm actually kinda leaning toward it being a Mat. I'm looking for those lists, hopefully someone else will know more.
Next time you change strings, maybe pull the pickups and snap some pics of the cavities? Construction method could be a clue to origin.
