To throw a cat amongst the pigeons compare the Oakland headstock to Greco and Ibanez:

...early Greco and Ibanez were made at Matsumoku...

The only thing that makes me question a Matt origin is the size of the control cavity. Is it that big on the Skylark?

That Artcore is far from an 'early Ibanez', it's not really a relevant example.

Define early. The above Greco (and Ibanez) headstocks are post lawsuit +1976. The Oaklands were made in 1980 around the same time as the Skylark. My guitar guys Oakland is 008050. From what I have researched (and I could be wrong) Matsumoku made guitars for Greco, and possibly Ibanez, up until 81/82.

Here is a perfect Oakland XI-100 (008088) for $400 US for sale in Budapest. (also claiming to be Matsumoku made).

I don't think the Ibanez Artcores came out until 2002 or so, that's what I meant. Not exactly concurrent with any of the other guitars being discussed.

The point of posting the Greco/Ibanez headstock was for comparison to the Oakland. I have now replaced the "modern" Ibanez headstock with one from a 1980 Studio neck-through.

I believe comparing the Oakland headstock to the Ibanez's is beside the point here. The whole guitar is identical to the Skylark models BUT the shape of the headstock (and some alterations in the controls). The similarities (to Ibanez) in the headstock could very well be coincidental. The similarities (to Skylark) in the whole guitar are not.

The Oakland is quite like the Skylark and the headstock is very close. Just the two bumps planed off the Greco/Ibanez shape and there you have a Skylark. As Matsumoku made Greco around the sametime it's quite possible the headstock was modfied from the parts bin for the Skylark and left as-is for the Oakland.
