I've posted this over at Westone and Electra as well, just to get everyone involved!! :D

Rightio, gang.... how do y'all keep your cased guitars from tarnishing??? We're right by the sea here, and I mean right by the sea - the Coral Sea is but 200m away - and the exposed metalwork on the cased kit tarnishes very quickly indeed.

I've thought about case dehumidifiers and bags of silica gel but these don't address the salty air issue, so; ideas, people? Is putting a clear coat on said exposed metal the only way out? That'd be a giant PITA.....

And any suggestions that we move to a drier, less sea side location will be met with derision and haughty dismissal, Don Mitchell!!

Hello Corsair.

It's been a long time since I've posted anything--I've been hanging around, but haven't had anything worthwhile to add.

Maybe I can help with this one. Maybe not.

Anyway... I use Brasso, Silvo, & 3M Tarni-shield to help maintain/preserve old knives & tools. They're combination cleaner/polish with very, very mild abrasives (won't scratch). There are some gel-coats that work on metal as well (no experience with those).

You'll probably have to disassemble bridges, polish parts individually, & reassemble, but to me it's better than a spray-on clear coat. All three leave a transparent protective film.

I don't know where you'd get them. I haven't seen them in stores for years (I occasionally find a can/bottle at an estate liquidation store). I guess that on-line everything store would have them (& maybe they've come out with something new & improved).

Thanks, buddy! As it happens, I have Brasso and Silvo here but the 3M product sounds interesting!!
