You are on to something regarding finish choices at production. It's not an uncommon practice to spray opaque finishes on grain that is cosmetically flawed or otherwise unsuitable for transparent finishes.

Capping is not uncommon either. Butcher block bodies of smaller less attractive cuts of wood are capped with larger more appealing grain. It's also much less expensive than using one or just a few larger, thicker cuts of wood.

Someone may correct me, but I am not aware of any Matsumoku made guitars with ply bodies made in the 1980s.

in the old original post...Darkey wondered if the case shown was original or not. I just bought a Hawk and it came with an identical looking case except mine is bright yellow inside. There is a chrome perimeter edge protector on both halves of the case for added protection. My case is flawless and not marked Washburn. I wish my Hawk guitar was as mint as the case. Wings etc that come with an original case are worth a lot more AFAIC because they are so rare to find in decent condition or any condition for that matter. I would give my butt for a original case for my Ibanez AM50 because a new Ibanez one made for it will cost $240 Canadian to my door....too much to take.
