I worked on a couple of Varitone equipped Gibsons back in my days at the shop. And I have to say I was underwhelmed with the tonal variations.
I found the differences to be so subtle that it didn't matter much. Perhaps in a recording situation it would be different but live? Not so much.

Even if the circuit is non functioning you'll still have a beautiful Mats to play! :D

There are a couple of vids on youtube with the ES800 (only ONE  Vid to be found for the ES500) where the player goes thru the various tones, There is really a difference, but as you say, on stage with a group it prolly wouldn't be that noticeable. I remember that our lead guitarist generally used the "0" position on his Gibson, but when he soloed - no others playing - he went thru the whole selection.

Jorg, I'm pretty sure it's the TA-50. All of the ES series have full binding and the TA-50 goes naked. The TA is also a stop-tail and has no center block. It was in the process of being re-strung when that full photo was taken. The finish also matches the catalog details.

Maybe so, but the body shape is different from the rest of the TA models. The TA has thinner horns where this is basically a 335 copy. This guitar also has the '79 transition headstock.
Post pics when you get it.

Jorg, you made me do some more digging  ! I'm beginning to get the feeling that it may be an ES750. There are no photos on the Mats site and I don't have a sub on VintAxe to browse the catalogs.

Yeah, I don't know. We have so little info on a lot of these and specs can change from market to market.
I would think this one would have the model inside the f hole.
Whatever it is, it's awfully pretty. Please post pics when you get it.
