Or are people asking outrageous prices for Japanese Aria Pro II guitars? I regularly see Cardinals listed for $500 or more  . PE-R80s listed for as much as $2000+ :yipes: . If this is actual value I have enough hanging on my walls to pay off my mortgage. I guess it's a good thing I got them when I did. :D

I think it's because some guy started a web site about Matsumoku guitars. I blame that guy.

I feel your pain.

John (Corsair) and I spent the better part of 14 years building up, supporting and promoting the WestoneGuitars.net Forum and accompanying website. All out of love and respect for the Mats workmanship.

In that time the same thing happened to our beloved Westies. The prices went up, up, up and availability went down, down, down! It's bloody hard now to find any decent copies, especially of the better, more innovative models like the Pantera and Prestige for example.

Like you I'm grateful for having found the 16 Westones that I have for very reasonable cost. Couldn't do it today!

I have noticed the upswing in asking prices as well... and I'd like to believe it is a matter of people finally understanding their real value, quality of craftsmanship, and not just the rarity (they aren't making them like this anymore). If the trend continues I'm sure we'll see a lot more APII's coming out of hiding, but whether they go to new homes quickly or not who knows.

That could very well be part of it. It seems to be certain models, most notably the mid and upper ranges. A CS-350 will command more than a comparable RS. A PE will bring more than a CS. All are fantastic guitars.

I very seldom see the words "quality" or "craftsmanship" in a listing. I do however see a LOT with two words I am immune to and really hate. The hype words "vintage" and "rare". Some people think because something is "vintage" it is "better" and more valuable. No, it is just old. For instance I have a Hamer SATF from the late 90s (Korean) and it plays just as good as either of my PEs. The only thing "rare" these days is usually a reasonable asking price.
