No, excessive and brutal use of sandpaper does NOT equal Road Worn. Not in this or any other universe. Would have bee a nice guitar had it not been subjected to sheer stupidity.

I bought a Switch Vibracell a while back and I told the seller he didn't have to put the bridge back on it because I would have to repair the damage to it. He came back with "It's not damaged, it's aged." NO, you sanded the anodizing off of it all the way down to the copper plating and that is NOT aged, it is damaged.

Sweet Mother of Matsumoku! :yipes:
"Road worn" my arse!

If you must relic a guitar there are proper, subtle ways to do that. And they do not involve a bloody belt sander!

The concept of "Relic" escapes me. To me it is a way of making a guitar look like you actually practiced your @$$ off when in reality you still sound as crrrrappy as you did a week ago before the damage was done. My first PE-R80 and CS-350s have their share of wear but that is from years of playing them. The frets on the R80 are practically flat from playing it so much (and most of its life it was strung with 8s).

I don't think it's a question of deceit as much as it is an attempt to recreate the "aesthetic" of it.
There is a certain beauty in a well played axe because it carries a myriad of gig stories with it.

True, most will never attain that status legitimately, but like a copy of a classic painting, you can still appreciate it hanging on your wall even if it ain't the real deal.

That said, most who attempt relicing fail miserably either because they don't understand the causal mechanics at work or they're just too stoopid to know when to STOP! :toopid:

I prefer to put wear on a guitar the old fashioned way. By playing it year after year. Relic is a little like makeup. It is deception. What meets the eye is far from reality.

Here is a perfect example. It fooled two friends of mine but the minute I saw it I KNEW it was faked and I told them so pointing out the many obvious giveaways. I saved them a good bit of money on what would otherwise have been folly. Sadly someone bought into it and they are in for a rude awakening when they take it someplace reputable for service. It is a torque poor relic job. Someone took a nice guitar and in all their idiocy fooooked it up royal.

There are tons of hi-res images on the web of real road worn instruments. Put up a picture. Don't ruin a perfectly good instrument.

I'm afraid I will never see the appeal of a purposefully damaged instrument.

Not cool, man. Unfortunately there are a lot of humans out there that want other humans to think they are something that they're not. Idiots.

Would you believe he sent me an offer of $315 + $115 shipping but the listed price is $275.

I'd go $150 max considering the damage done. Probably requires filler before re-fin. No telling how much of the wood was ripped away. I'd have to put many hours into restoring it and I may be retired but my time is not free. If the PO was fool enough to do that kind of damage to the body what about the electronics and truss? I'm guessing he and his buddies are Saturday Night Tweaker Soldering Iron Warriors as well.

I wouldn't give that [highly edited] the satisfaction of being able to get rid of it.
I want him to look at it every day for the rest of his life and know he's a special kind of idiot. :scream:

Ok I'm done. :D
