Thanks so much for all this good advice!

It is not all that easy to see what is going on inside the cavity, but perhaps just pulling the pickups out a bit will give me more insight (and light to see by!).

I'm still leaning in the TV Jones direction, though. Several Gretsch guitars whose sound I admire have a similar construction: neck through (or "center block", they call it) and hollow wings.

Some thinking to do.
