Hi Pete,

I just had to try with the knobs. They are like hen's teeth and like you, I want my guitars as original as possible. And you're right, I'm from the Netherlands.

Rob.

They are indeed like hen's teeth. When I put together my orphan RS, I looked for some time before finding a set of these and luckily got the entire circuit with them for $20.
Pete, if you decide to part with them, go ahead and get them to Rob. I don't currently have a project for them (I'm sure I could find one :devil2:) , I just didn't want them to get tossed.
If he doesn't want them, I certainly do. Just let me know what you want for them. :D

You Sir, are a gentleman. But if I were Pete, I would hold on to them. You never know when you might need them. That being said, I think I have to seriously start looking into the possibilities of 3d printing.

A couple of Westone Forum members have done just that fairly recently with some success. Not perfect but not bad at all.
Having accurate measurements seems to be the hardest part.

Other members have molded and machined some replicas the old fashioned way and they turned out very well. Of course, you have to have the expertise and machinery handy to do that!

Hello Barry,

I have been following the the 3d progress on the forum. My plan is to take the professional route by having the knob scanned and printed. There are quit a few of those businesses in my city, but I just haven't gotten around to visiting one. I gonna look into the possibilities and more importantly, the costs. I might even start a business :D , because there is a demand.

Rob.

I think 3D printing is the "duck's nuts" as Corsair would say. And I think it's exactly the right medium to recreate those (mostly small) proprietary guitar items that you can't find.

Dunno if you can get rich doing it, but it looks like fun!

However, while 3D printing is very promising indeed, I've been watching some YT vids showing how to cast the likes of knobs with a silicon mould and resin casting - looks quite straight forward, really!!

Yes, for knobs, that would seem to be a simpler approach for sure, and should result in a much smoother product with little need for sanding. And you're more likely to get an accurate sizing as well.

3D printing is a great solution for more complex shapes like acoustic bridges for example. But again the complicating factor is getting accurate dimensions to begin with.

The Chinese seem to have come thru again. I just ordered another set of knobs that look very similar to the originals but with a gold crown. I'll post a photo when they arrive.
