Well I've had some time with it now and all I can say is WOW!!!!! I thought I wouldn't like these pickups but much to my surprise I love them. Plays like butter too. Worth every penny I spent. I've also decided I like the series/parallel option. It works well with these pickups where it didn't all that well on most of my Duncan equipped guitars.

MMK53s tend to be a bit muddy in the neck position. Parallel operation helps a lot to tighten the bass response.

For my PE-R80s (Dimarzio and MMK versions), I usually have the bridge pickup in series and the neck pickup in parallel when playing. Never liked the coil split sound on those.

I used to have a set of SH1s in a PE-60 for some time... but I always used them in series wiring when playing.

I rarely use the neck pickup save for simple leads where I want a creamier tone. I have the neck pickup pretty low on most of my guitars. Definitely lower than most people do, probably flush with the face of the guitar or a little lower (below the pickup ring). Too close and not only to they clamp the strings more but they can get pretty "boomy". Not my favorite tone.

I do use the neck pickup for clean sounds frequently... especially when the guitar has a Duncan SH4 (or similar) in the bridge position that sounds great with overdrive... but not so great clean.
