Just a quick update....

IT'S FINISHED!!

(well as finished as it's going to get for a while).

I'm currently trawling it around my local jam sessions & getting used to it. It's a bit of a learning curve as you soon realise just how approximate your fingering is when you're so used to frets, but it's fast taking over from my SB-900 as number one favourite.

Final photos & a couple of soundclips (before with the EMGs and after with the Armstrongs) to follow.

Also a huge thank you to the guys at The Gallery who have shot the fingerboard in to a truly scary level of trueness at a very reasonable price (£60).

Pete.

Probably the final update for a while....

Here's a video link to me hacking it up at The Coach & Horses in Leyton High Rd E10 on a Wednesday night...

also... http://www.coachandhorsesbluesjam.com

The mwaaahhh isn't prominent in this, but of late it's been on the increase - think it might be down to the fingerboard starting to tramline & the whole thing generally bedding in.

Frets feel very odd now.

I'll endeavour to get around to digging out/creating some sound samples at some point.

Pete

I thangyew. (It's not scripted y'know, that's one of the few that I felt happy with - IMO solos are for Guitarists & Keys an' suchlike - I've had a few thrust upon me that really shouldn't have been!)

TBH I have no idea what 70-80% of the numbers are called! The frontman (Steve King in the clip) will usually just call it along the lines of "Swing Shuffle in A, quick change, coming down from the 5 - watch me for the stops" & it's only come the chorus that I actually find out its "Everyday I Have The Blues" (or whatever)!

All good fun though & a great learning curve. I reckon I've learned more in the last 18 months or so that I've been going to jam sessions/open mic nights than I did in the previous 25 years or so of playing to the bedroom curtains. That said, the curtains never shake their head reproachfully if you crash & burn and don't mind if you start the tune again (& again, & etc).

If anyone hereabouts has a jam near them & they don't go & they're not gigging.... well extract digits chaps & support your local jam, I say.

Pete.

Nice Job Pete !Way to make that thang swing ! Beautiful work on the axe and it sounds great, glad that you're both getting out of the house now and then.

Cool solo - sounds like you're adjusting to the fretless just fine.

All the best,
gribb

Thanks for all the niceness chaps - opinions of one's peers counts for a lot dontch'er know.

I found these lurking in my camera...

Headstock Transfers, a solution:

1: Spray the headstock Gold ( I did try gold leaf, but didn't turn out as i expected) -

Image

2: Print out a reversed image onto waterslide transfer paper - use a laser printer if you know what's good for you -

Image

3: Trim off the excess, lacquer it until it's sorry, flat & polish -

Image

The transfer film was very thin & caused much profanity in application. Also surprisingly thin is the black toner from the laser, which allows the gold to show through a bit giving a slightly brown cast - it's not visible under stage conditions though.

On reflection I think the "paragraph" is a bit too big. It's a simple matter to correct the artwork but I'm in no hurry to refinish it again.

Another little mod was to the edge of the neck. I rapidly took the view that having a lined fingerboard is a complete waste of time (unless you play like Peter Hook from Joy Division/New Order), but having fret markers on the edge is a boon. 1/2 an hour with a razor saw & a bottle of Tippex (Sno-Pake) later...

Who's a clever fellow then?
Sneaky, but clever.
