It´s funny...we´re like halfway across the world from each other and still pull this off in EXACTLY the same manner.
FWIW...when wetsanding it might help to ad a drop of dishwasher detergent to the water. Keeps the paper cleaner as you go. That and a wettex-to make it easier to view progress.

Sometimes when i´m down to the 1500 i bring out the buffer and some rubbing compound to a given spot just to check how much more sanding that needs to be done.
