Post subject: My 1983 Epiphone Casino
PostPosted: Sat 25 Nov 2006 09:37 AM
Hello everyone!
I bought an '83 Epiphone Casino in Ochanomizu, Tokyo about 6 weeks ago for 63,000 yen with case (aprox $550.) It plays like a dream with very low action and no buzzing anywhere. The wood is just beautiful - deep brown figured maple. P-90s are made by Maxon and are great. I play it with an old Ibanez analog delay (coincidentally also made by Maxon) and a new Boss OD-3 Overdrive. P-90s love overdrive. After I took these photos, I took the pickups out and cleaned them up.

Also, I wrote a Wikipedia article on Matsumoku. I recently read the interview with Shiro Arai and had to change a few things, but it's a good start. Some of the info comes from Japanese magazines that I've translated.

(You might recognize the Casino.)

Thanks for the interest. Next time I change the strings, I'll photograph the reverse side of the pickups. I'll see if I can get a pic of a pot too. They're fairly big, about 2" in diameter.

From what I've seen on ebay and Yahoo Auction Japan, there aren't many Matsumoku Casinos, at least not many being traded. I mainly see Sheratons and Rivieras.

Here's a Sheraton listed on Yahoo Auction. I know our gracious host doesn't want ebay links posted (well this technically isn't) however, I wanted to show this for the sake of IDing Matsu Epis, and because you were interested in pickup photos (wish they were clearer.)
83 Sheraton

The seller, a music store, states this is a 79 based on the pickup cavity number. That's the same confusion I had as my Casino has a 78 written in it. After much research, I found that Matsu/Epis started a serial number year ID system in 1980, so this Sheraton is a 1983 (January.) The 79 is a production identification number. I downloaded about 30 pictures of Matsumoku hollow body Epis and studied them carefully (including all of Tads.) There was a change in specs and finishes in 1980, so I'm sure this is an '83.

Also note the microtuning tailpiece. I've never seen one of those on a Sheraton, Matsumoku or otherwise. Actually this would be a Sheraton II with the stop tailpiece. My guess is that it's original, either custom order or one of Uncle Matt's unique contributions. It seems that even though Matsumoku was a mass production operation, they always added a little character to every guitar they made.

BTW, if you click on the seller's name, guitarmanias, and look at his other stuff, you'll see a Yamaha SG-2000 (currently in high demand in Japan.) There is a link between Matsumoku and that guitar, but I haven't quite figured it out completely. I believe that either Matsumoku engineer Hayashi (H. Noble) was on the design team, or that the entire guitar was designed by Matsumoku's engineering staff.

Mixolydian...bout the Harness pics....I'm just curious to see if it's the similiar type as my Casino...all pots & o/p jacks are in 'Dust Cover' like those described in the following 77' catalog...not sure if that's commonly used for japanese archtops of various producers from that era to have those ..or just Mats...

http://www.matsumoku.org/models/ariapro ... 8.jpg.html

Hmm... 2" pots sounds like Dust Covered to me.

The neck pickup cavity of the Sheraton u showed has what looks like a 'reinforcement screw' ...like those in setneck AriaPros...interesting...

Hey..since ur based in Japan..maybe u can try to contact Tad Miura for help to establish some facts about Matsumoku/Epiphone link...just a suggestion..

Cheers all ...

I looked at the pic. They're the same.

I'll email Tad. He seems to be quite the expert on Matsumoku Casinos. He's also the only one who's ever mentioned Matsumoku's Taniguchi sub-contract, something I'd like to know more about. BTW, I saw one of his red Casinos for sale a few weeks ago.

Did you read the Shiro Arai article in Guitar Buyer? Here's a link: Shiro Arai Interview Scroll down to the scans posted by Crusty.

After reading it, I had to revise my Wikipedia article a little. One thing he cleared up was the actual business relation between Aria and Mats. I knew about Singer owning Mats from Japanese magazines, but info on the web always stated that they bought them in 86 or so. Not true. Singer (Japan) owned controlling interest in Mats from 48 or 49. Also, I've read that Yamaha seriously considered buying Matsumoku in 86, but Singer wanted them to assume all debts, so it fell through.
