UPDATE:I finally found a solution of sorts to the clutter of (now) 21 guitars and cases/bags!
It had to be a two part solution since I still have to keep a lot of the hard shells, and collectively when loaded, are heavy as hell. So, steel it had to be for them!
I found this 5-shelf steel adjustable (important) unit on sale at the local Home Depot for $89. As A bonus it is finished nicely and has little bit of design flair to it, not your average utility unit. So it fits well in a finished room.
The heaviest and bulkiest cases are on the bottom, with the shelf adjusted upwards to accommodate. The remaining space above becomes problematic though in a standard height room. All I could do on the second shelf was manage to squeeze in my 2 Ovations on edge. Bulky but not heavy. On top there was only room for my Gibson and the Goya on their backs. I may rearrange later but that's all I can think of for now.
Oh yeah, the two left over shelves? I flipped 'em vertically and placed 'em at the back then tied 'em off with 4 of those plastic cable tie thingies. They act as both a back stop and additional lateral reinforcement. You can see the top one clearly on the second shelf.
The remaining guitars are in padded gig bags, or else I'd
really be in serious storage troubles! For them I again found a 5-shelf soft spruce storage unit on sale. It wasn't too badly made but it had slots already cut in for the shelves, so not adjustable. So-o-o, I looked at it carefully and figured I could re-arrange the bits and pieces a little to suit. A few pulled staples here, a few saw cuts there, and some additional wood screws et voila! I had two rack units from one shelving unit. Cost $26.95.
I have no idea where I'm going to put the Urchin!
