I just picked up a sb1000 that seems to have original hardware sans two tuners which have been replaced. Is it worth trying to find an original replacement for these? Or would changing them out be the better option? Not sure how much effect the tuners have on the bass itself, but it would be nice to have a completely "original" model.

Any thoughts on how hard/expensive it would be to find originals? Or what would be a good replacement set if that is the option you'd recommend?

Thanks!

I never tried to replace tuners on the SB, but I would guess that the current Gotoh 720 model is a direct replacement. You have to double-check (for some models the hole for the screw has been moved a mm within the years.

Anyway, buying used tuners is always a gamble, they might be worn out already.

Thanks for the reply. Does anyone know where you can order the 720s? I don't see anything readily available online.

Or would these work?

Fortunately for you, Stewmac provides a detail drawing (scroll down on the page)... you can just remove one of your tuners and compare.
