Yahoo Auction Japan is basically Japan's version of ebay. I've seen guitars on Yahoo Auction Japan one week and the same guitar on ebay the next. There are several people who live in Japan, buy guitars, and make a living (or suplement their living) selling to the US, Canada, UK, Austrailia, etc. Not a bad life really.

Most sellers on Yahoo Auction Japan do not ship internationally, so unless you know someone in Japan, you can't bid. Still, you can look and get an idea of what the guitar goes for in Japan, (or what price the international seller paid for it.)

Here's the link:
Yahoo Auction Japan

Most English will work, however, here's Matsumoku in katakana: マツモク
Copy and paste that for Matsumoku searches. Not all sellers in Japan know that their guitar was made by Matsumoku, so check the brand names as well (in English.)

I'm running the US version of Windows and can view most Japanese characters. If you click onto a Japanese site, Windows should prompt you to put your Windows CD in and load the font sets. You can also get help on doing this at Microsoft.com.

Bingo, it worked.

I had to use IE to get the dialog box that asks
if one wants to install the Japanese fonts.

Firefox is now properly displaying the characters also.

Thanks for the cool tip

hey.... i live in japan and Yahoo Auction is my BEST friend...
I spend hours sitting in front of my computer and just scanning the many many different guitars available here... esp on friday sat and sunday nights when most of the auctions end... bit of an addiction actually.

cheap prices for the average guitar and great place to look for collector's...

This is a great site. Today it has two Tri-Sound 600s on it and also an Inazuma for about £40! I would love to be able to read these ads. I'm off to learn Japanese...

yeah I`m in Japan too. Smaller city with fewer guys looking so I`ve found some unbelievable deals up here...gettin harder to find though, but I started buying years ago, well before the feeding frenzy on older MIJ guitars thats been underway for a few years now...and of course if I knew then what I know now I`d have a LOT more of em. Still, can`t complain, I own more wonderful guitars that any player could possibly use in a single lifetime. Buy and sell on Yahoo Japan and so far so good, been very painless and my wife does all the communicating, you know, eliminates the having to deal with a dirty gaijin problem.

So... i just returned from another wonderful visit to Japan's guitar fantasy world.... in Tokyo... dozens of guitar stores together in one Ghetto.

I was interested to see that the prices of used Aria's and other Matsu. are going up... its a bummer... cause I would love to get a few keepers without spending a ton of cash. I think the word is definitely out now about Matsu guitar... as well as the same era Greco's and MIJ Fenders....
gotta be really lucky to land a good deal these days...

the King.
