Oh Johnny, that's just beautiful!
Great job. Do your dad proud that.

Hey, I was gonna say that...

Yeah, "WOW" is all I got right now. It's superb.

Well, chaps... today I dragged most of my old gigging kit out just to see if it all still works - apart from my old valve guitar amp which doesn't!! - and here we go..

Image

Image

... yes yes; I know there's not an obvious Vantage there... yet.. it's right here..

Image

... the "Corsair" Avenger. I have to say that I'd never really stretched out on it until now with proper amplification but, gee whiz; what a beautiful little guitar!! Light on the shoulder with pretty good dynamics but the noise it can make... OMG!!! I wasn't game to take it to performance level without letting the neighbours know what's going on but even at the admittedly quite loud enough levels I played it at, that pickup just kept getting "creamier", for the lack of a better word: I had a touch of overdrive on it at lower levels but once the gain started getting higher it would overdrive quite happily all on its own - beautiful!!
Obviously it is tonally limited, but what it does, it does very well indeed and there is a modicum of tonal variation with the coil split - very convincing Telecaster - and the remarkably good tone pot.
It is not, however, a shredders guitar - not even close!! - but for pretty much everything else it will fill its boots happily enough, and for the likes of ZZ Top type chunky rhythm, it is right there, in yer face!! The fast boys won't like the baseball bat neck nor the skinny frets - neither did I at first! - but once you get used to it, no worries!!

I'd have no worries gigging this thing without backup or a spare becasue it is a very capable instrument; none at all!!

The Vantage Avenger series.... IMHO, a very much forgotten and under-rated gem!

That seems to describe a lot of our beloved Mats, eh?

Great pics!

Feel the same way about my 4 Avengers John. The 325 's are beautiful and versatile, and the single pup 310 and X77T just flat out rawk yer socks off! Um, in your case, sandals.

Thanks, Jorg!!

My point is that these Avengers are the scabby, low level denizens of the Matsumoku Vantages, not upmarket VA 900s, or PE1000s, or even X300 Panteras.... but boy howdy; they are GOOD!! The Avengers are an immediately likeable guitar; sort-of cheap and cheerful, you know, but they sure as hell deliver the goods!

TBH, I'd be surprised if anyone could tell the difference in sound quality alone between a piece played on my all-singing, all-dancing VA900, and this AV310 at any sane volume!!

Barry.... thanks!! Hoping to bludge a 325 off Don; I have a paint finish in mind to complement the Corsair Avenger!!

Alrighty then... hell; 4 years since I started this and 3 since I finished it!! Anyway, I'm going to make a few changes to it: new machines, new nut, new string trees and pickup swap. The big change is going to be a side-mounted Electrosocket output and given that I don't want to damage the finish, the current output hole will be a switch, probably coil split but I'm open to suggestion?!
I may also sand the headstock back and have another go at it as it was never really 100%, and while I have the sandpaper out, the back of the neck is going back to bare wood! I like the look of the Bougainville Avengers headstock - matched to the body colour - , so that is a go-er as well.
Suggestions are more than welcome as to a suitable pickup for the hole; it has a 45 but I'm looking to change simply because I have lots of 45s in other guitars. Toneriders of some stripe are looking pretty good...

So, come on, lads - well, anyone who's still in here!! - let's see what we reckon, eh!!
