Kinda hard to improve on this one-lung wonder. It already rocks like crazy, so I guess all you can really do is mess about with the tone.

If you move the split coil function from the tone pot to a toggle you could maybe think about replacing the tone pot with a varitone switch. Or maybe try one of those fancy-schmancy Seymour Duncan triple shot mounting rings? Both cheaper than a pup replacement.

Not sure what a Filtertron or a Foil pup would sound like, but I don't think a single coil give you enough variation.

Yeah...certainly not going to go for a hot-as pickup, but there's a myriad of choice out there!!

That's right!! The Duncan Triple Shot ring.... more research!!

Could be a bit fun, this alteration!! :loon:

Ok... Tonerider AC2 Classic purchased and installed... just needs plumbing in. Output jack changed to a sidemounted Electrosocket and the control deck changed about a little, with the tone pot changed to a CTS and located in the old output jack position; volume is now a CTS and in it's usual spot - the old tone pot possie is now a DiMarzio on/on/on DPDT switch for series/split/parallel sounds.

I thought lots about this and decided that a less powerful pup might just do the job as I have MMk45s everywhere - as I sit in my chair in the louhge, I can see 4 such pickups in the 4 guitars I have indoors at the moment...

The headstock has been sanded right back, and Hans the painter is going to paint on the NZ wings and medal ribbons.... I told him there was no great hurry in the hope that he'll not charge me what the job's worth!! (He's been a bloody good bloke in that respect to date!!)

Those Tone Riders look like they're the real deal. I know Westbone (at the Westone Forums) is a big booster of them.

So, you're gonna split this baby, OK.
And optionally run the 2 coils in parallel/series? Don't know that I've ever heard a single pup playing against itself that way. Your split reading is around 4K yes? Should be interesting to hear what kind of signal comes out.

I know, right?! :D I had to do something to fill the output jack hole that wouldn't affect the the finish and with a 4 conductor pickup, it seemed the thing to do; it will certainly be interesting...

I haven't put a meter across it in situ yet, but even tapping the pole pieces with a screwdriver while cycling the switch elicits quite different noises; not subtle at all; quite excited, if I'm honest!

The X-99 Avenger that passed through my hands briefly has a series/parallel switch and if I recall corectly, it wasn't a subtle thing at all....

... quick and dirty measurement of the 3 switch postiions gives me ...

Up position - 2.12kΩ (series)
Middle p[osition - 4.25kΩ (coil split)
Down position - 8.34kΩ (parallel)

.. and as I said, tapping the slugs/screws gives a resounding thump in all positions with quite different tonal qualities!!

Wow, 2.12 K? Almost not there! Even my Danelectro lipsticks are hotter.
